ROBOT IN RESIDENCE
ROBOT IN RESIDENCE is an innovative form of artist residency that seeks to integrate and expand live performance in cultural institutions, festivals and communities. It intersects comedy, improvisation, performance, puppetry, installation, filmmaking and community narrative building. The residency model delivers site-specific performances that highlight aspects of the visitors’ experience, offering them a unique and novel interpretation through Tubby’s ‘robot filter’.
Our first iteration of Robot in Residence took place at the Nati Frinj Festival in 2009 in the small rural Victorian town of Natimuk (population 520). The project provided the stimulus for the residents of Natimuk to imagine what their future may be. There we explored the extent to which an anthropomorphic character can illuminate the visions of humanity. Tubby juxtaposed fantasy and reality in a way that gave the community a unique opportunity to engage creatively with visioning a future identity for themselves and their town.
